so, in science and music, we finally get to the awesomer stuff! we learned that pitches are not just sound waves in the air. if you have a regular rhythm, and speed it up, eventually, you get a pitch. and you can combine rhythms to get intervals! An interval of a fifth has a 3:2 ratio of the frequencies of the notes of the fifth, but it can also be formed by a 3:2 ratio of rhythm -which means if you have someone tapping triplets and someone else tapping eighth notes, speeding that up will produce a fifth when we get past the point that our ears cannot distinguish the rhythms, and instead, perceive them as pitches! wow. super long, totemo luosuo de sentence….

:( the gift certificate i received is only good for entertainment stuff, not clothes. sad.

oh, right. i forgot to mention the flaming speaker. so, the science&music professor hooked up his iPod to a hollow tube. somehow, there’s gas pumping through the tube. the top of the tube has a row of holes, like a wooden flute. he lights a tiny flame in each of the holes, so when he turns on the iPod and plays music, the music is transmitted into the tube, varying the (gas distribution, flow?)idk, but you can see a wave of the little flames, growing shorter and taller. think: little flames=people’s arms doing the wave in a stadium. that’s what it looks like. and when the bass line beat out the rhythm, the flames flickered in time with the beat, and had especially dramatic flickers when there was an accent. wish i took a video of it and could post it.  it was truly music+physics.

So I was washing the pot after using it to cook wonton noodles for lunch ^_^ and started swishing the water faster and faster in a circle so that there was a whirlpool. Apparently, school isn’t over yet, because the next question that came to me was, “How can you explain the physics behind this?”

Here’s what I’m imagining: The water going in circles wants to fly horizontally out of the pot in a path tangent to the circle, but the walls of the pot supply a normal force pointing toward the center. So most of the water stays inside the pot unless I swish it too fast. But there’s not just water at the walls of the pot, but also water in the middle. Perhaps the middle water pushes on the edge water that is near the walls, but the edge water is not solid, so it gets pushed by the middle water toward the wall, so the water level is forced upward near the wall, and you get a sunken depression in the middle of the whirlpool.

Any thoughts on this?Please help!

You can tell that I did not look any of this up on the internet cuz I’m in a BLISSFUL SUMMER DAZE. Nooo…only one more month left at home… :(

I can’t believe what happened over the weekend…

So, ndc!!! went to D.C., and we stayed up until 2 a.m. practicing our script! and laughing randomly, with Addy and Anya-anya playing the drawing game on the laptops. so many ndc adventures. and it was definitely worth all the work that it took.

For some reason, though, the 3 A’s got this weird habit of laughing at me whenever they watched me eating. Really weird. And they laughed at Addy eating too.

We met lots of nice, cool people from the other states. Most were taller than us. But that’s ok, cuz they were nice ^_^

I still kind of don’t realize that I was actually with ndc!!! this week. what happened to the rush of running tests on the maniacal, fickle EFD, and the rebel-ness of pushing back my physics hw because of rwdc? yeah, im so boring that [not doing physics hw]=[rebel!!!]

plane ride is torture. airbus wings are pretty. Spring break!

Also disappointed that no one there asked the meaning of our name. i wonder if it is a widely used acronym.

so, ndc!!!, our team for RWDC, has finally turned on the engines…and sputtering. But that’s alright, because we know we’ll fly one day. There are too many variables in making wings. It seems like everything little change will render the general trend obsolete. It’s really fun going to school and making airplane wings with my friends. It sounds like I have a really sad life, but I don’t. and it sounds like I’m in denial, but I’m really not. That’s why my friend “Dopey” calls me “Happy” ^_^
